The two major classifications of surfaces, developed and refined over the past 30 years, are mattress overlay and mattress replacement. A mattress overlay is a support surface placed directly on top of the mattress, and may be constructed of foam, air or gel. A mattress replacement takes the place of a standard mattress and offers a variety of functions to suit specific care needs, including static air, alternating air, low air loss, and immersion.
