Medical Service Company provides food for hungry in community
This November Medical Service Company, a local medical equipment provider, gave thanks by giving back to the local community. In addition to the company’s annual food drive, Medical Service Company donated $500 to Oakwood Village to provide full Thanksgiving meals to local hungry citizens.
The company gave the monetary donation to Oakwood Village Mayor, Gary Gottschalk, to help determine those individuals in greatest need of the meal. The fifty meals were prepared by and served at the local Village Restaurant.
“We have much to be thankful for,” said Joel D. Marx, Medical Service Company CEO.
‘It is our staff’s hard work that makes it possible for us to help so many not just during the holidays but all year long.”
November also hosted Medical Service Company’s annual food drive. This year, the company collected 3,410 pounds of food for the food pantry at University Settlement, a local non-profit organization.
“The food drive is something our staff looks forward to every year,” Marx said. “It gets to be a competition because we are excited to be able to help people in our community who need it.”
Medical Service Company’s Team MSC, a group of employees who plan service projects for employees, hosts the annual food drive. In the last four years, the company has donated more than five tons of food.
Team MSC, which stands for “Making Significant Contributions,” organizes a variety of events throughout the year for employees to give back to the community. In addition to the annual food drive, in 2009 employees also hosted an American Red Cross blood drive, participated in the American Lung Association Asthma Walk and organized a United Way Pacesetter campaign.
The University Settlement is a non-profit organization that serves the Cleveland community with a wide range of services including senior and child care, parenting programs, youth mentoring and a hunger center. The organization has evolved to serve the changing needs of the community since its founding by Case Western Reserve University in 1926.

Joel Marx Discusses Home
Care on CSPAN
Joel D. Marx, CEO, had the opportunity to represent Medical Service Company and the home care industry, live on CSPAN’s “Washington Journal,” September 5, 2009.
Marx appeared as a representative of the American Association for Homecare and addressed the misrepresentations about home medical equipment, in particular, the use of oxygen therapy.
Marx’s appearance on the program was in reaction to a statement made by former Medicare administrator, Bruce Vladek, on the same program a week prior. While commenting on about oxygen therapy provided in patients homes, Vladek said “Medicare pays $3 billion for air—because that’s all it really is.”
In addition to addressing the home oxygen therapy issue, Marx also responded to questions from the moderator and the audience all the while emphasizing that home care is a solution, not a problem, for high health care costs.
